Guided by the motto “Insight must precede application”, scientists at Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy (MPI-SP), whose founding director CASA speaker Christof Paar is, perform basic research on topics related to security and privacy. The result of this research is then translated into practical solutions that make a positive impact in the real world. The Karl Heinz Beckurts Prize recognizes scientific achievements that have been crucial for developing innovative applications in industry. This year, the award goes to Christof Paar.

Significant Contributions to Cybersecurity

Throughout his career, Christof Paar has made significant contributions to the efficient implementation of cryptographic algorithms, side-channel analysis, and hardware security. The application of his findings has made a significant impact on the security of several types of devices and software against cyberattacks.

“I am humbled to be recognized by the Karl Heinz Beckurts Foundation with this prestigious award. It always feels very rewarding to me to do research that actually improves real-world applications.”, says Paar. “I am deeply grateful for the exceptional support from MPI-SP and Ruhr University Bochum. Without the Bochum cybersecurity ecosystems, I would not have been able to pursue the research that led to the honor of receiving the Karl Heinz Beckurts Prize.”

"Prof. Paar is an international leader in applied cryptography"

The guiding principle of the Karl Heinz Beckurts Foundation, which was founded in 1986, is to promote the partnership between science and industry. The Karl Heinz Beckurts Prize is awarded every two years and honors achievements resulting from the cooperation between science and industry.  The head of the Stiftung, Prof. Christian Stegmann, declares: “I am delighted that the Karl Heinz Beckurts Foundation has awarded Prof. Paar the prize. He is an international leader in applied cryptography. He has not only made fundamental scientific contributions but has also decisively advanced the practical implementation of security solutions in industry. His work combines in-depth theoretical knowledge with a strong practical application.”.
