Research Environment in Bochum


Located at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB), one of the leading research universities in Germany, the Cluster of Excellence has a network of relevant research partners in its immediate vicinity:

  • Horst Görtz Institute for IT Security (HGI): Founded about 20 years ago, the Horst Görtz Institute for IT Security, Research Department of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, is one of the largest and oldest institutes for basic research in computer security in Europe. Its unique interdisciplinary structure includes the fields of computer science, electrical and information engineering, and mathematics, as well as the humanities and social sciences.
  • Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy (MPI-SP): The Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy was founded in Bochum in 2019 and serves as a center of excellence for basic research and for training the next generation of scientific leaders in cyber security and privacy. The institute's mission is to research and develop the technical foundations and interdisciplinary aspects of cyber security.
  • Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS): The Center for Advanced Internet Studies is an interdisciplinary research institute funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and is dedicated to researching the social opportunities and challenges of the digital transformation.
