Description
Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) is one of the leading research universities in Germany. As a reform-oriented campus university, it uniquely combines the entire range of the major scientific disciplines in one place. The dynamic coexistence of disciplines offers researchers and students alike special opportunities for interdisciplinary cooperation.
The Cluster of Excellence, "CASA - Cyber Security in the Age of Large-Scale Adversaries" at Ruhr-University Bochum offers postdoctoral positions within our “CASA Jump.Start Program for Postdocs”.
About CASA
CASA conducts research on sustainable computer security against powerful, large-scale attackers, in particular nation-states. The Cluster is funded within the Excellence Strategy of the Federal Government and the Länder. The funding of 30 million euros allows us to lend excellent support to the needs and ambitions of upcoming scientists.
Research at CASA, which is based at the Horst Görtz Institute for IT Security, follows a strongly interdisciplinary approach. In addition to technical questions, it also investigates the interaction of human behavior and IT security. At CASA, researchers from the fields of computer science, cryptography, electrical engineering, mathematics, and psychology work together in a unique constellation in Europe. This holistic approach is unparalleled and holds the potential for scientific breakthroughs.
CASA Jump.Start Program for Postdocs
As part of our Postdoc Jump.Start Program, we are permanently looking for excellent postdoctoral candidates with an outstanding track record in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, and psychology (preferably with a relationship to technology) or related disciplines. The position will enable you to work on your own research agenda.
Postdoctoral positions are limited to two years. The salary will be according to the remuneration group E 14 TV-L (full time). Since the funding is provided by external third-party sources, postdoctoral researchers are generally not obliged to take on teaching duties.

Research Focus of Our Excellence Cluster
CASA stands for "Cyber Security in the Age of Large-Scale Adversaries" and is supported as a Cluster of Excellence (EXC) in Germany as part of the Excellence Strategy by the German Research Foundation (DFG). It was founded in Bochum in 2019. The research of our Cluster of Excellence is characterized by a highly interdisciplinary approach, which not only addresses technical questions but also explores the interplay between human behavior and IT security. Therefore, CASA encompasses these research focus areas in its four Research Hubs: Future Cryptography, Embedded Security, Secure Systems, and Usability. This unique, holistic approach forms the basis for our excellent IT security research.

Our Research Network
CASA is located at the Horst-Görtz Institute for IT Security at Ruhr University Bochum. Founded about 20 years ago, the Horst-Görtz Institute for IT Security, a research department of Ruhr University Bochum, is one of the largest and oldest institutes for fundamental research in computer security in Europe. Its unique interdisciplinary structure includes computer science, electrical and information technology, mathematics, as well as the humanities and social sciences. The institute hosts the largest IT security training programs in Europe, maintains extensive industry networks, and has spawned numerous successful cybersecurity startups.
Additionally, the Max Planck Society has established the Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy in close proximity to the cluster, with which we closely collaborate. This outstanding environment provides excellent working conditions in an extremely current and exciting field.
The Center for Advanced Internet Studies is an interdisciplinary research institute funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, dedicated to researching the societal opportunities and challenges of digital transformation.
