Researchers from Bochum celebrated three successes at important conferences in Boston, USA: At this year's „USENIX Security Symposium“, CASA PI Konrad Rieck and CASA Phd Alexander Warnecke (TU Braunschweig), and their team, received a Distinguished Paper Award for the paper "Dos and Don'ts of Machine Learning in Computer Security." (Daniel Arp, Technische Universität Berlin; Erwin Quiring, Technische Universität Braunschweig; Feargus Pendlebury, King's College London and Royal Holloway, University of London and The Alan Turing Institute; Alexander Warnecke, Technische Universität Braunschweig; Fabio Pierazzi, King's College London; Christian Wressnegger, KASTEL Security Research Labs and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology; Lorenzo Cavallaro, University College London; Konrad Rieck, Technische Universität Braunschweig).
Another team of Bochum scientists received a "Distinguished Artifact Award" for their paper „Fuzzware: Using Precise MMIO Modeling for Effective Firmware Fuzzing“ (Tobias Scharnowski, Nils Bars, and Moritz Schloegel, Ruhr-Universität Bochum; Eric Gustafson, UC Santa Barbara; Marius Muench, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam; Giovanni Vigna, UC Santa Barbara and VMware; Christopher Kruegel, UC Santa Barbara; Thorsten Holz and Ali Abbasi, Ruhr-Universität Bochum).
CASA PI Alena Naiakshina was also honored with an award. The paper she co-authored, „Let’s Hash: Helping Developers with Password Security“ (Lisa Geierhaas and Anna-Marie Ortloff, University of Bonn; Matthew Smith, University of Bonn and Fraunhofer FKIE; Alena Naiakshina, Ruhr-Universität Bochum), received a Distinguished Paper Award at the „SOUPS - Symposium on Usable Privacy and Security“.
