In this section you will find information regarding our call and submission procedures, including timeline and templates for the individual funding lines.
Starting from 2021 on, there will be a CASA Call deadline at the end of each quarter. The respective call deadlines for 2023 will be:
All CASA PIs may submit proposals for
A) Fundamental Research Projects or
B) Transfer Projects.
Furthermore, postdoctoral researchers may submit a proposal for a
C) Jump.Start-Project.
Finally, CASA has devised the
D) High Potentials Program and the
E) RISK.Projects.
Standard duration: 3 years, Size: 1-2 PhDs or Postdocs, 1-2 PIs (details cf. below)
CASA supports applications for projects which involve several PIs, at best on topics spanning several Research Hubs of the cluster. The holistic approach of CASA was a decisive selling point for the application and hence we need to deliver regarding the interdisciplinary character of our cluster.

Submission
Evaluation
All proposals submitted will undergo a two-step evaluation. The first step will involve peer-review of each proposal by one international scientist who will be identified by the four Research Hub Leaders. For the second step, the review results will be forwarded to the Management Board. The board members will discuss the proposals, taking into consideration the review by the external expert, the relevance for the Research Challenge and the CASA cluster as a whole. The Management Board will decide whether the proposal fulfills funding specifications, and then rank all proposals. It is likely that more proposals will be submitted than funding available, which will mean that the best proposals are executed.
Standard duration: 1-2 years, Size: 1-2 PhD or Postdocs, 1-2 PIs (details cf. below)
Goal: Transfer Projects are conducted together with Transfer Partners. These can be either companies or official institutions. The overall goal should be to test CASA research results and technologies for later adoption and eventual marketization in practical systems. Furthermore, Transfer Projects can be dedicated for the evaluation of usability aspects of scientific solutions developed in CASA.
We envision seven Transfer Projects total over the runtime of CASA 1.0.
Submission: For Transfer Projects, the same process applies as for Fundamental Research projects. For the proposal, you can use the template ►here.
Goal: Our goal is to attract postdoctoral researchers "not too long" after their promotion and enable them to conduct their first own research project with the mentorship of a CASA PI (similar to the “Eigene Stelle” program of the DFG). We offer a “jump-start” into an academic career via 2 year contracts. We expect that within the duration of this contract, candidates will be able to write a successful proposal for a third-party funded Early Career Researcher Group (such as a DFG Emmy Noether group or an ERC Starting Grant).

Regulations:
Proposal submission:
Goal: In CASA, the default research projects are Fundamental Research Projects, mostly led by two CASA PIs. However, in ordert to hire outstandig doctoral candidates as fast as possible once they are on the market and give more flexibilty in the hiring process, we have devised the „High Potentials“ program. This program is dedicated to M.A. graduates with outstanding grades, ideally first publications, and a very promising outlook regarding their further career in research or industry.
Regulations:
Submission:
Applications can be submitted at any time. Please use the ►template for Fundamental Research Projects.
Goal: In order to put special emphasis on emerging areas in cyber security, CASA offers a new project format to address high-risk/high-gain research problems, called RISK.Projects. Since high-risk / high-gain research topics come not only with a chance of innovative new results, but also with a high likelihood for failure, RISK.Projects will have the following 1+3 years timeline.
Regulations:
We expect that at the most there will be 1 or 2 RISK.projects financed through this format. I.e. our expectation is that the projects will constitute a fundamental progress in emerging areas.
Submission:
If you are interested, please contact the respective Leaders of your Research Hub, Angela (Hub D), Christof (Hub B), Eike (Hub A) and Ghassan (Hub C).
