PROFESSORSHIP for System Security (m/f/d) (Open Rank: Tenured W3 or W2 Tenure Track / W1 Tenure Track)

A W1 or W2 Tenure Track / Tenured W3 Professorship for System Security (Open Rank) is to be filled at the Faculty of Computer Science of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum at the earliest possible date. Applicants should have an excellent track record in research and teaching in at least one of the following areas:

  • System Security: Operating systems security, web security, distributed systems security, cloud computing security
  • Program analysis and analysis of security protocols
  • Machine learning security and privacy
  • Data-driven security and measurement studies
  • Privacy and anonymity
  • Applications of cryptography to real-world systems
  • Wireless security
  • Network security (intrusion and anomaly detection, network infrastructure security, DoS and countermeasures)
  • Strategic and economic aspects of real-world system security

We are looking for a scientist with an internationally visible research profile who will complement existing research focus areas and actively participate in the development of the newly founded Faculty for Computer Science. We expect a willingness to cooperate with the Horst Görtz Institute for IT Security (a research department of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum) and a leading role in current and planned projects, especially in the Cluster of Excellence "CASA: Cyber Security in the Age of Large-Scale Adversaries". The Max Planck Institute for Cybersecurity and Privacy offers additional possibilities for collaboration. These outstanding research institutions position Bochum with its extremely vibrant digital ecosystem as one of the leading research locations for IT Security in Europe. There is also ample opportunity to interact with the well-developed start-up community in the area of security and computer science, including Worldfactory Start-up Center and the Cube 5 IT Security incubator.

In the case of the W1 or W2 professorship with W3 tenure track, the successful candidate will initially be appointed as a temporary civil servant for five (W2) or six years (W1). At the end of this period at the latest, the tenure track will lead to continued employment as a tenured W3 university professor, provided that the necessary aptitude, competence and academic performance have been demonstrated and that the legal requirements pertaining to Section 38 of the North Rhine-Westphalia Higher Education Act (Gesetz über die Hochschulen des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen, HG NRW) are met. In addition, the recruitment criteria of Sections 36 and 37 of the North Rhine-Westphalia Higher Education Act (Gesetz über die Hochschulen des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen, HG NRW) apply.

The responsibilities of the future chair holder include participation in teaching in the IT security and computer science study programs. The prerequisites are excellent scientific qualifications, usually proven by a doctorate of outstanding quality, positive evaluation as a junior professor, habilitation or equivalent academic achievement, top international publications, as well as proof of particular suitability for academic teaching. Also required is the willingness to participate in academic self-administration.

Furthermore, we expect:

  • a high level of commitment to teaching,
  • the willingness to engage in interdisciplinary scientific work,
  • profound leadership experience (W3) or the willingness to grow into such a role (W1 or W2),
  • the willingness and proven ability to submit significant third-party funded research projects (W3) or the willingness to participate in existing research collaborations (W1 or W2).

Research Environment
